Why would you need a methane gas detector?

I'm an old fashioned bloke who likes to do things the old fashioned way. That's why I'm wondering why a methane gas detector would be necessary? I mean I can fully understand it if you are someone that has lost the sense of smell, but for those with working noses surely it's a no brainer. What do methane gas detectors that your nose can't? If it smells like someone has cut the cheese, then it's probably methane buddy.
