What the hell is an elliptical?

What's the deal with giving fitness products and equipment bizarre brand names. Case in point, the Precor elliptical. Now, in my opinion, having read or heard that name, the average consumer would have no idea what the product actually is or does. Here are a couple of examples of names for exercise equipment that make sense. The exercise bike, the tread mill, the punching bad. You read those and straight away can take a pretty good guess at what they are and do. Now compare that to the Precor elliptical. See what I mean?
