Reinforcing “high frequency words” in the early years

A question was posted in the forum recently regarding tips/tricks for reinforcing the “high frequency words” in the classroom. The question read:

I would love some new ideas to reinforce the 'high frequency words'. Different word games, activities, etc. There are only so many games of Word Bingo my Prep grade can play. Any suggestions?

I’m sure there are quite a few of us that can identify with Word Bingo wear out! Any way, I plumbed the depths of my knowledge, and upon scrapping the bottom, asked a friend. Her suggestion was a simple one, but some times simple is the best, particularly when it comes to classroom games!

Break your class into small groups. Then lay out a set of high frequency word cards in the center of each group, so that the words are showing (face up). The teacher then says a word (from the cards in the center). The first child to point to the correct corresponding card is the winner for that round, and that child is handed the card. Repeat this until there are no cards/words left. The winner is the child with the most cards.

To ensure that everyone in the class is involved, it may be necessary to position the easier words next to the children who may be having difficulties. In simple terms, rig it, without looking like your rigging it! :P

I haven’t seen this one in practice, but it sounds like a potential winner. If anyone gives this a try, we’d be glad to hear about the results.
