One thing I've learned over the years is that getting any sort of professional market research done is an expensive business. Whilst it can get expensive, in the long run it can save you a whole lot of money, and help you avoid some very costly mistakes.
It is too easy for people to make decisions based on their own personal opinion, or point of view, and this can be a dangerous thing if you are marketing a product or service. Particularly if you're are targeting a market in which you yourself do not belong.
My recommendation, if you're looking to spend money on developing a new product or service, then strongly consider spending some cash on research prior to out laying huge sums of money.
