Topic: Sea Creatures and their Habitat
Year: 3/4
Timeframe: 5 weeks
Objectives: Students will develop an understanding of the sea, and its creatures, their habitat and factors which impact on their survival in order to become familiar with the world in which they live. In addition, it is essential students understand the variety of human uses of the sea and how these have impacted on the survival of sea creatures and their habitat.
Key Understandings: Students will:
• Use research skills to discover facts about sea creatures and their survival;
• Explore the relationship between humans and the sea, identifying the benefits we gain from the sea and the impact this has on its inhabitants;
• Understand that certain conditions are necessary for the survival of living things in the sea;
• Compare basic needs of survival, looking at both humans and sea creatures;
• Identify the main features of different sea habitats;
• Identify the reasons threatening the survival of sea creatures and a healthy sea habitat.
Skills: Reading, researching, communication, discussing, interpreting, designing, recording, comprehending, co-operating, hypothesizing, describing, sharing, observing, questioning, seeking solutions.
Assessment criteria:
Observation and discussion will be used constantly while more formal forms of assessment will also be used. Work samples will be used on activities such as “Creatures Features” and “What makes a home” poem. The research conducted by students in the database activity will provide a good opportunity to gauge students understanding and the development of research skills.
