Hoodia in danger of extinction

I actually thought hoodia was a brand of car, turns out I'm wrong. Hoodia is a cactus-like plant from South Africa that is used as an appetite suppressant. Obviously it's been used as a weight loss "wonder drug", and people seem to be buying. How long it continues to sell though will depend very much on demand.

According to a story by BBC News, on a report issued by Botanic Gardens Conservation International, hoodia is close to extinction:

Hoodia, which originally comes from Namibia and is attracting interest from drug firms looking into developing weight loss drugs, is on the verge of extinction, the report said.

Looks like a lot of people have been cashing to quickly, without thinking about responsible management of resources.

If you've been relying on hoodia to lose weight, it may be time to start considering alternatives.
