All new Britannica Student Encyclopedia for winter

Students in grades three through six will have a new way to do research when the all-new Britannica Student Encyclopedia is published this winter.

Prepared by the editorial department at Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc., it represents the first new multivolume print encyclopedia from a major publisher in recent years and is designed to provide a reference work of contemporary substance and style for today's students in the elementary grades.

Containing 2,300 articles, 3,300 photos and images, and 1,000 maps and flags, the 16-volume set gives students what they need for homework and projects while making special efforts to introduce them to the craft of research.

"Today's students are the most demanding in history when it comes to wanting information quickly and expecting it to be interesting and digestible," said Michael Ross, a senior vice president at Britannica and general manager of the company's education division. "There's nothing on the market that combines the kind of broad coverage, lively writing and presentation and rich graphical design that kids expect from reference books today. That's why we created this encyclopedia."

Ross said that while Britannica is primarily a digital publisher today, print still has a big role in education, and the company stays close to educators to understand what they need. The elementary grades, he said, are when students really use reference works for the first time, and it's important that their first experiences with research be pleasant and fruitful. Yay books!
